This is a very informative site! I am currently developing a film about Robert Emmet and the American Emmet family's interest in their history and this year's anniversary events. I would like to hear about any events related to Robert Emmet that are being held in America and would also like to compile a list of all Emmets planning to be in Dublin for the commemorative events planned in the fall.

My Grandfather came from County Wicklow in late 1800. My father, Robert Emmet Sargent was named after Robert Emmet, as was I and my son, Robert Emmet Sargent, III. I am now retired and have the time to research my ancestry and namesake. Also, my Grandmother was Mary O'Connor, from County Wicklow. My sister and nephew have visited Ireland. I would also like to make the trip in the near future.

With some friends I have agreed that I will perform Emmet's speech from the dock for the Gasyard Féile this August in Derry's bogside. I will try my best to learn it off. One thing that would help me enormously would be to hear a recording of it by a better actor than me. Does any one know of any online or other source where I could find one?
Please drop me a email if you do.

I grew up in Emmetsburg Iowa, a small town in the northwest part of the State. Emmetsburg was named after Robert Emmet and is home to one of the four statues of Emmet. His statue is on the town square facing the main street. I have walked past it many times and reflected on the ultimate sacrifice that he made. In the last year I have managed to visit three of the four statues of Emmet. I have been to those in Dublin, Washington DC and Emmetsburg. I don't think I'll make it to San Francisco any time soon. I hope folks in these cities will remember Robert Emmet this September.

I have a framed copy of Robert Emmets speech in its entirety which I purchased for my Dad (since deceased) about 30 years ago from an antiques store in Sydney. I would like to sell it. If anyone is interested please email me.
The carved wooden frame measures 23" x 31" and features a picture of the man himself and his signature.
Kind regards,

Well done on the website...I am Irish and had read that Emmet gave a powerful speech to the Court that condemned him, and indeed read its last few lines. However, your website gave me my first opportunity to read it in its entirety. I was amazed to see your pictures of the statues commemorating him in Washington and San Francisco (both of which cities I have visited) and also that there is a city named after him. It may interest your visitors to know that Abraham Lincoln is reputed to have learned by rote Emmet's speech from the dock. It is in any case impressive to see how the remarkable courage of one man has inspired so many.
Go raibh maith agaibh. (Thank you).

Came to the site to learn about Robert Emmet, after we saw the incomparable Tommy Makem perform. Tommy quoted Emmet's haunting line, "When my country takes her place among the nations of the earth, then, and not till then, let my epitaph be written." Tommy followed that with a performance of Nell Flaherty's Drake, a symbolic song about Emmet... Very moving. Excellent site! May the epitaph be written sooner than we expect, that further generations may read of Emmet in triumph, rather than in sadness.

I had the pleasure of dining at Emmet's Pub & Restaurant in Boston, Mass., which is named after Robert Emmet. The restaurant -- a quaint establishment with a warm and inviting interior of dark wood and red walls -- has become one of my favorite restaurants. The placemats on each table contain the history of Mr. Emmet, who sacrificed his life to help Ireland secure sovereignty and individual liberties. It is refreshing, particularly in this age of instant gratification, to see history preserved in an unsuspecting place such as a pub. Let Mr. Emmet's legacy continue to inspire generations of Irishmen, Irishwomen, and Americans of all walks of life.

There used to be an old road in Ballina that the residents named Barney's Boreen after an old itinerant caled Barney Moran. Barney Moran lived to be a great age and died in Ballina, Co. Mayo, Ireland, Workhouse in 1878. Before he died he confessed to two well-known businessmen that he was the one that executed Robert Emmett on the instructions of Major Sirr. In his lifetime he often spoke highly of having met Emmett and the manner in which he met his death. Moran is buried in Leigue cemetery in Ballina. A great search took place in Dublin for Emmett's skull as he was hung, drawn and quartered. The twist to this story is that Emmett's body or skull was never found. There lived in Ballina an historian called Con Murray who told the story that Major Sirr ordered Moran to bring the remains to where he lived and bury them so that a monument could not be erected over his remains. This man claimed to know the exact spot where Emmett was buried and showed it to some people - in Old Leigue graveyard. Will we ever know what happened to Robert Emmett's body. P. J. Clarke, Balliina, Co. Mayo.

Trying to find my family tree & have to thank the poms for sending quite a few of my fore bearers out here on a one way ticket as convicts. One was Nicholas Pendergast alias Micheal Pendergass who was sentenced to 7 years for "seducing soldiers to desert" (seducing may have had a different meaning back then like the word gay?. He was sent out on the infamous Tellicherry ship with the famous five main rebels. All very interesting! Its just very difficult to find out much information about him due to two hundred years of buildings and their info being wrecked one way or another! So if anyone knows of any Pendergast's in their family being sent out here from Erin, back then in 1822 please let me know! Marie
